Live in harmony with one another. Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly.
Never be wise in your own sight.
Romans 12:16
Comparing the narratives we find in the book of Judges with our day and time, we come to discover there is nothing new. People still rage against God’s will—we know better, but we sometimes struggle mightily to think or do better.
It’s laughable how full of ourselves we can be. We may think we’re the exception to the rules of man—that we will never die, never stumble, never fall. This is being wise in our own sight. And yes, Christians can sometimes be the worst bunch.
We’ve probably all known some Christian (at least in name) who is so full of himself that he acts like he can do no wrong. And when he is presented with what he’s done wrong, he simply explodes on those who have had the audacity to confront him. In my own 41 years of preaching I can attest to the hubris of some who strongly believe they can do no wrong, and yet their lives show otherwise. “You will recognize them by their fruits.” (Matt 7:16)
They profess to know God, but they deny him by their works” (Titus 1:16)
The anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God. … But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. (James 1:20, 22)
